Ruby Gold
The Life of Ruby Gold is an active, mixed-media memoir combining photographs, text and audio. The Life she portrays is of the EveryPerson.
Ruby is flexible and expansive, she is an avatar taking on many forms. Everything in the world of Ruby hinges on a story of color and the ideas and associations they symbolize in religion, marketing and in nature.
Who is Ruby? Ruby is an exploration of forms, balance and amplification. As a symbol she is concerned with ego, systems, myth and technology. Ruby contains aspects of all forms; male and female, personal and impersonal. She is an expression of the god-consciousness found in all things, including people.
What does she look like? She can be a pig, a cow or any other being that grows and breeds, from an insect to a plant. She can be a star system or a galaxy. Ruby has a changing face and that face can be freely remixed into new works by other artists, as long as the new work isn’t a clone of the original work. We don’t like clones.
How is she a memoir? Ruby exists from snippets of my life, as a photographer, as a writer, as a person who works and travels like everyone else. Usually these snippets are transformed so that they lack the original context and speak of my emotional and intellectual recollection of the world I experience. Ruby is a memoir of consciousness. She is an exploration of self between analogue and digital.
Is Ruby for sale? Fine art prints are available for sale and files suitable for making screens and web based works are available for free to artists who like the imagery and want to use it in their own projects. For those looking to purchase prints, all are limited edition in a series of seven. Please contact Marguerite Sigal if you’re interested in purchasing a signed and numbered print.
Statement When I created Ruby I explored her as a separate entity, imagining an alter-ego of sorts. She developed into a mutable form through time that exposes a much larger cultural transformation. She exposes her own myth which I discover as much as I develop. Much like the avatars that we freely use to represent ourselves, Ruby stands in relation to that which she represents. In a world of diminished linear context, Ruby Gold serves as a platform for transitioning ideas of the cultural Self.
